In reply to Krivi K ………… I don’t enter into back and forth arguments. But if one reads the articles one recognizes that I’m still correct. The hormones don’t exist long enough to get into the water column.

specifically where the person said

Some examples are androstenedione and immunosuppressive pheromones. Hormones outside SRIF can have an effect on fish growth regulation.

I have learned more from the articles on this site than from countless hours watching self-proclaimed aquarium experts on YouTube.

My journey into the hobby began unexpectedly when my granddaughter won a goldfish at a fair in February and I inherited the fish. What started as a simple attempt to keep a goldfish alive quickly turned into a deep dive into the world of aquariums.

Fortunately, my son had an unused 10-gallon starter kit sitting in his garage, so I jumped in and began learning. The past three and a half months have been both enjoyable and challenging, filled with plenty of mistakes, lessons, and discoveries.

Perhaps the most important lesson I’ve learned is that many so-called experts rely heavily on anecdote, repetition, and marketing rather than evidence. Your science-based approach has been a refreshing contrast. The articles on this site have helped me separate fact from opinion and make better decisions for my aquarium.

Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and for providing a resource that encourages critical thinking and evidence-based fishkeeping.

Comment on 8.4. Sponge Filters by AE https://tankstartguide.com/8-4-sponge-filters/#comment-3686 Sun, 31 May 2026 23:02:05 +0000 http://tankstartguide.com/?page_id=1177#comment-3686 Are ATI sponge filters really decent filters? They say on their website that their fine sponge filters are 30 ppi but when I look at them in person they’re 40 ppi, especially when I compare them to Aquarium Co-op’s 40 ppi foam.

I saw this comment on social media criticising your page on “hormones”,

It said you left out a couple of things and was not considering a few other hormones apart from the ones mentioned, thought it might help your page to take a look for more info.

I am not sure whether you have considered this already, It would be great if you had some insight on this!!

Thank you

In reply to Bradders . You are 100% correct in your assumptions and conclusions. Nothing I can add, other than the probability that a UV unit will help with the problem.
