in reply to anony mouse …… Safety Sorb generally works well. It does not strip fertilizers or KH from the water column. And build up slopes wherever you want. Just be aware that you prized cichlid will spend all day reducing your slopes to holes. Won’t hurt anything, just a game they play.

You mentioned “ brown oil absorbing fused clay” over a UGF, what type did you use? Safe t Sorb? Or something else? Does it strip out fertilizer nutrients and KH from the water column?

I’m also interested in how to effectively build in slope to the substrate when using UGF plates. I’m wondering how effective the UGF is when the substrate is 4-5 inches deep at the back and 2 inches up front.
